Greetings from CET Academic Programs!
Welcome to the Winter 2002 Faculty Newsletter.

It is hard to believe that twenty years have passed since CET launched its first study abroad program in China. Located at the Beijing Foreign Language Normal College, that summer program enrolled around 20 students of Chinese language. Since those pioneering days, CET has sent approximately 2,500 students to China, many of whom are now making significant contributions to Chinese-American relations in the realms of business, politics, and academics.

Since those early days, much has changed in China, and much has changed at CET as well. Our China programs have expanded to include both CET Harbin and Nanjing Immersion, managed jointly with the Hopkins-Nanjing Center. In 2000, we launched four innovative programs in Europe and Southeast Asia— each one sharing many of the characteristics that made our China programs so successful. Emphasizing high academic standards, immersion, and careful student management, our new programs offer alternative choices to students who are serious about their overseas learning. With the help of three advisory boards, the programs have gained momentum quickly, and we are proud of what they are already contributing to the field.

I encourage you to take a moment to read this newsletter to find out more about what’s new at CET. As we begin our twentieth year, and as we head in new directions, we are reminded of how dependent we are on your feedback. We urge you to contact us with questions or comments about CET’s offerings. And we wish you the very best for a happy, productive 2002.

Sincerely,

Mark S. Lenhart
Director, CET Academic Programs
