  1.掌握所读材料的主旨和大意;
  2.了解阐述主旨的事实和细节;
  3.利用上下文猜测某些词汇和短语的意义;
  4.既理解个别句子的意义,也理解上下文之间的意义关系;
  5.根据所读材料进行判断和推论;
  1. The main idea of this passage is _______
  2. This passage tellsus_______
  3. Which of the following statements best expresses the main ideaof the passage?
  4. Which of the following sentences best summarizes theauthor's main point?
  5. Which of the following best states the theme of thepassage?
  6. The subject matter of this selection is ______
  7. Thepassage mainly discusses_______
  8. This passage illustrates ______
  9. This paragraph centers / focuses on ______
  10. This passage mainly deals with______
  11. This passage is chiefly concerned with ______
  12. The author'spurpose in writing this passage is _______
  13. What is the passage mainlyabout?
  14. What is the best title of the passage?
  15. The major pointdiscussed in the passage is转自学易网 www.studyez.com转自学易网 www.studyez.com
In rock music there is a distinct and almost overwhelming beat.No singlebeat is characteristic of the music today. But each song has an easilyrecognizable rhythm. As you listen to a son9,your foot usually starts to pick upthe beat. Before lon9,your entire body seems to be moving with it.Your headpounds with the beat, and there is no room for thought.Only the surge of themusic is important. In its own way, rock music is as dominant as the rockGibraltar. Its message is an evergrowing emotional one.
在这一段文章中 “In rockmusic there is a distinct and almost overwhelming beat.”
The vegetable and fruit and flower merchantsare surrounded by baskets of purple eggplants, green peppers, strings of tinysilvery onions, heads of bitter Indian spinach.and a dozen Indian vegetables forwhich I don’t even know the English names.I had forgotten about the profusion offruit in India—it is only during the brief intense summer that you see muchvariety of fruit in Moscow. In Russia,as winter approaches all vegetables exceptfor potatoes and the pervasive cabbage in soup seem to disappear from themenus.
I had forgotten about the profusion of fruit in India—it isonly during the brief intense summer that you see much variety of fruit inMoscow.”
  例3
People live in cities today thinkthat meat is something that comes wrapped in cellophane.from thesupermarket, potatoes come by the pound in plastic or paper bags, and feathergrows in hats. The city dwellers’ views are quite different from the views oftheir ancestors, who knew that? meat is hunted down in the forest, potatoes areplanted and weeded, and only birds can produce1eathers. Yet, whether people todayrealize it or not, they are still as dependent on animals and plants for theirexistence as their ancestors were.
Yet,whether people todayrealize it or not, they are still as dependent on animals and plants for theirexistence as their ancestorswere.”
Abus driver must answer questions while guiding a bus through heavy traffic. Allday long, the driver answers the same questions without becoming angry. Everyfew minutes a bus driver has to ask passengers to step to the rear of the bus.In spite of traffic snarls and thoughtless passengers who cause delays, a busdriver is expected to cover his or her route onschedule.
  这一段的隐含主题句可概括为“Driving a bus is hard work.”
A green I-538 form is usedby international students in order to obtain permission from the Immigration andNaturalization Service to transfer from one university to another in the UnitedStates. If you are planning to transfer, remember that you must obtain thepermission before leaving the university where you are currently studying. Youmust complete the form I-538, have it signed by the foreign student advisor, andsubmit it to the District Office of the Immigration and Naturalization Servicetogether with the form I-20 from the new school and the small, white form I-94that was affixed to your passport when you entered the country.
Submitting the signed 1-538 and other documents does not insure permission totransfer. Only an official of Immigration can decide each case. Students whohave not completed one term of study at the school that issued them their firstI-20 are not advised to file for permission to transfer until they havecompleted one term.
What should an international student d0.if he or she wants to transfer from oneuniversity to another in the United States.

这些问题常有except,not(mentioned/true),least等。例如:
  1. What causes ?
  2. Some people do sth. because__________
  3. Sb. is …because ________.
  4. Why does the author mention ...?
  5. Which of thefollowing best characterizes the main feature of...?
  6. Where in the passagedoes the author describe...?
  7. Which of the following does the author wantto illustrate in discussing ...?
  8. What time does the writer think is ?
  9. What does the author pay least attention to?
  10. Which of thefollowing is not a result of _______?
  11. All of the following may be ...except ________.
  12. Which of the following is not mentioned?
  13. Which ofthe following statements is true ?
  14. The author states all of the itemslisted except_______.
Ourshas become a society of employees. A hundred years or so ago only one out ofevery five Americans at work was employed, i.e., worked for somebody else. Todayonly one out of five is not employed but working for himself. And when fiftyyears ago "being employed" meant working as a factory laborer or as a farmhand, the employee of today is increasingly a middle-class person with a substantialformal education, holding a professional or management job requiringintellectual and technical skills. Indeed, two things have characterizedAmerican society during these last fifty years: middle-class and upper-classemployees have been the fastest-growing groups in our working population--growing so fast that the industrial worker, that oldest child of theIndustrial Revolution, has been losing in numerical importance despite theexpansion of industrial production.
Yet you will find little if anythingwritten on what it is to be an employee. You can find a great deal of verydubious advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion. You can also finda good deal of work in a chosen field, whether it will be the mechanist's tradeor bookkeeping. Every one of these trades requires different skills, setsdifferent standards, and requires a different preparation. Yet they all haveemployeeship in common. And increasingly, especially in the large business or ingovernment, employeeship is more important to success than the specialprofessional knowledge or skill. Certainly more people fail because they do notknow the requirements of being an employee than because they do not adequatelypossess the skills of their trade; the higher you climb the ladder, the more youget into administrative or executive work, the greater the emphasis on abilityto work within the organization rather than on technical abilities orprofessional knowledge.
  1. According to the passage, with the development ofmodem industry, .
  A. factory laborers will overtake intellectualemployees in number
  B. there are as many middle-class employees asfactory laborers
  C. employers have attached great importance to factorylaborers
  D. the proportion of factory laborers in the total employeepopulation has decreased
2.According to the writer, professional knowledge or skill is________.
  A. lessimportant than awareness of being a good employee
  B. as important as theability to deal with public relations
  C. more important thanemployer--employee relations
  D. as important as the ability to co-operatewith others in the organization

Although deficienciescan be corrected during the first year, the student who needs additional workshould expect tO spend five instead of four years completing a degree.
1.What is the average grade point that an entering freshman in engineeringshould haveachieved in his or her high school?
2.When should a student begin planning for a career inengineering?
3.In normal situations, howmany years are needed for a student to complete adegree?
4.How many credits are required for a highschool diploma?
5.How many credits need a studenthave in English?

  1. The word "..." in line ... refers to ______.
  2. The expression "..." (line paragraph ...) is closest in meaning to
  3. In line.., the word "..."most probably means ________
  4. In line.., the word "..." could best bereplaced by _________
  5. By “...” the author means _________
  6. The word"...", as used by the author, most nearly means ________
  7. In this passage,the word "..." means
  8. "..." in the context of the passage refersto ¬¬¬_________
  9. “...”, as used in the passage, can best be defined as_________

Perhaps the most merciless robber of sleep, researcherssay, is the complexity of the day. Whenever pressures from work, family, friendsand community mount, many people consider sleep the least expensive item on hisprogram. "In our society, you're considered dynamic if you say you only need 5.5hours' sleep. If you've got to get 8.5 hours, people think you lack drive andambition."
To determine the consequences of sleep deficit, researchers haveput subjects through a set of psychological and performance tests requiringthem, for instance, to add columns of numbers or recall a passage read to themonly minutes earlier. "We've found that if you're in sleep deficit, performancesuffers," says Dr. David. "Short-term memory is weakened, as are abilities tomake decisions and to concentrate."
  1. The word "subjects" in line 6 refersto ________.
  A. the performance tests used in the study of sleep deficit
  B. special branches of knowledge that are being studied
C.people whose behavior or reactions are being studied
  D. thepsychological consequences of sleep deficit
Labor'sconcern over automation arises from uncertainty about the effects on employment, and fears of major changes in jobs. In the main, labor has taken the view thatresistance to technical change is unfruitful. Eventually, the result ofautomation may well be an increase in employment, since it is expected that vastindustries will grow up around manufacturing, maintaining, and repairingautomation equipment. The interest of labor lies in bringing about thetransition with a minimum of inconvenience and distress to the workers involved. Also, union spokesmen emphasize that the benefit of the increased production andlower costs made possible by automation should be shared by workers in the formof higher wages, more leisure, and improved living standards.
To protect theinterests of their members in the era of automation, unions have adopted anumber of new policies. One of these is the promotion of supplementaryunemployment benefit plans. It is emphasized that since the employer involved insuch a plan has a direct financial interest in preventing unemployment, he willhave a strong drive for planning new installations so as to cause the leastpossible problems in jobs and job assignments. Some unions are working fordismissal pay agreements, requiring that permanently dismissed workers be paid asum of money based on length of service. Another approach is the idea of the"improvement factor", which calls for wage increases based on increases inproductivity. It is possible, however, that labor will rely mainly on reductionin working hours in order to gain a full share in the fruits ofautomation.
  1. The idea of the "improvement factor" ( line 7, paragraph 2)implies roughly______.
  A. wages should be paid on the basis of length ofservice
  B. the benefit of the increased production and lower costs should beshared by workers
  C. supplementary unemployment benefit plans should bepromoted
  D. the transition to automation should be brought about with theminimum of inconvenience and distress to workers
  本题要求学生根据上下文理解improvementfactor(增值因素)的含义。
Before the nineteenth century, scientists with aninterest in the sea were few and far between. Certainly Newton considered sometheoretical aspects of it in his writings, but he was reluctant to go to sea tofurther his work.
For most people the sea was remote, and with the exceptionof early intercontinental travelers or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let alone to ask whatlay beneath the surface. The first time that the question "What is at the bottomof the oceans?" had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when thelaying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineershad to know the depth profile of the route to estimate the length of cable thathad to be manufactured.
It was to Maury of the US Navy that the AtlanticTelegraph Company turned, in 1853, for information on this matter. In the 1840s,Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages during which soundings weretaken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book The PhysicalGeography of the Sea.
The cable was laid, but not until 1866 was theconnection made permanent and reliable. At the early attempts, the cable failedand when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in livinggrowths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was nolife in the deeper parts of the sea.
1.“Defied” in the last sentence probably means________.
  A. ‘‘doubted” B. ‘‘9ave proof to”
  C.‘‘challenged’’ D. ‘‘agreed to”

We find that bright children are rarely heldback by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge andexperience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streamingpupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at differentrates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not—SO-brightchild.After all,it Can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the topgrade!
  1.By “held back”(1ine l)the author means“¬¬¬________”.
  A. made toremain in the same class
  B. forced to study in the lower class
  C.drawn to their studies
  D. prevented fromadvancing
Ihave noticed that you do not holdback in our discussion.(我发觉你在讨论时并不犹豫);(2)“控制”,如:The dam was not strong enough to hold back the floodwaters.(大坝不够坚固,挡不住洪水);(3)“保留、不公布”,如: I think he’s holding something back;heknows more than he admits.(我认为他还隐瞒了一些事情,他知道的比他承认的多)。
In the workplace, men have long hadwell—defined precedents and role models for achieving Success. It has beenotherwise for women.A good many women in the business world are uncertain aboutthe appropriate mixture of ‘‘masculine’’ and “feminine” attributes they shouldconvey by their professional clothing. The variety of clothing alternatives towomen has also been greater than that available for men.Male administrators tendto judge women more favorably for managerial positions when the women displayless “feminine” grooming—shorter hair.moderate use of make—up,and plain tailoredclothing. As one male administrator confessed,“An attractive woman is definitelygoing to get a longer interview, but she won’t get a job.”
  1.The word“precedents” in line l probably refers to __________.
  A. early acts for mento follow as examples
  B. particular places for men to occupy especiallybecause of their importance
  C. things that men should agree upon
  D. men'sbelief that everything in the world has already been decided转自学易网 www.studyez.com

1.Which of the following may cause/lead to ... according to the passage?
2.Sb. is asked/advised to do sth. Because ________.
  3. The aim of...is/was ______.
  4. The best solution for ... seems to be ________
  5. is specifically mentioned in paragraph ... as an example of _______.
  6. The author argues that a teacher's chief concern should be ________
  7. According to the passage/author, people differ in their opinions about .
  8. … encourages the use of sth. so that _______
  9. According tothe passage the new device proved to be _________
  10. Which of thefollowing best characterizes the main feature of... ?
Do you find getting up in themorning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr.Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energycycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say thatyou're "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is whenyour cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comesduring the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one hasdiscovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: "Get up,John! You'll be late for work again!" The possible explanation to the trouble isthat John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much familyquarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can't change your energycycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr.Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay uplate anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up laterthan you want to.
If your energy is low in the morning but you have animportant job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won'tchange your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your lowpoint.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with aleisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before puttingyour feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by layingthem out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoonand save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharperhours.
  1. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably
  A.he is a lazy person
  B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle
  C. he is not sure when his energy is low
  D. he is at his peak in theafternoon or evening
(Do you find getting up inthe morning so difficult that it’s painful?) John is at histemperature-and-energy peak in theevening.
  2. Which of the following maylead to family quarrels according to the passage?
  A. Unawareness ofenergy cycles.
  B. Familiar monologues.
  C. A change in a familymember's energy cycle.
  D. Attempts to control the energy cycles of otherfamily members.
本题的关键是看懂文章第二段的最后一句(即:“Much family quarrelling ends whenhusbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle eachmember of the family has.”),同时联系本段的第四旬和第五旬(即:“For some people the peak comesduring the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon orevenin9.”)
  3. If one wants to work more efficiently athis low point in the morning, he should _______.
  A. change his energycycle
  B. overcome his laziness
  C. get up earlier than usual
  D.go to bed earlier
最后两句又说,“…rise before your usual hour…work beaerat your lowpoint.”(“如果你在上午处于能量的低潮,但你有重要的工作要在上午做,那么你就要比平时早起。
4.You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ______.
A.help to keep your energy for the day's work
  B. help you to control yourtemper early in the day
  C. enable you to concentrate on your routinework
  D. keep your energy cycle under control all day
首先要注意这一段的第一句“Get off to a slow startwhich saves your energy”,也就是说早上慢慢起床可以节省能量。
We all knowthat the normal human daily cycle of activity is of some 7-8 hours’ sleepalternating with some 16-17 hours’ wakefulness and that, broadly speaking, thesleep normally coincides with the hours of darkness. Our present concern is withhow easily and to what extent this cycle can be modified.
The question is nomere academic one. The ease, for example, with which people can change fromworking in the day to working at night is a question of growing importance inindustry where automation calls for round-the-clock working of machines. Itnormally takes from five days to one week for a person to adapt to a reversedroutine of sleep and wakefulness, sleeping during the day and working at night.Unfortunately, it is often the case in industry that shifts are changed everyweek; a person may work from 12 midnight to 8 a.m. one week,8 a.m. to 4 p.m. thenext, and 4 p.m. to 12 midnight the third and so on. This means that no soonerhas he got used to one routine than he has to change to another, so that much ofhis time is spent neither working nor sleeping very efficiently.
The onlyreal solution appears to be to hand over the night shift to a number ofpermanent night workers. An interesting study of the domestic life and health ofnight-shift workers was carried out by Brown in 1957. She found a high incidenceof disturbed sleep and other disorders among those on alternating day and nightshifts, but no abnormal occurrence of these phenomena among those on permanentnight work.
This latter system then appears to be the best long-term policy, but meanwhile something may be done to relieve the strains of alternate day andnight work by selecting those people who can adapt most quickly to the changesof routine. One way of knowing when a person has adapted is by measuring hisbody temperature. People engaged in normal daytime work will have a hightemperature during the hours of wakefulness and a low one at night; when theychange to night work the pattern will only gradually go back to match the newroutine and the speed with which it does so parallels, broadly speaking, theadaptation of the body as a whole, particularly in terms of performance. Therefore, by taking body temperature at intervals of two hours throughout theperiod of wakefulness it can be seen how quickly a person can adapt to areversed routine, and this could be used as a basis for selection. So far, however, such a form of selection does not seem to have been applied inpractice.
  1. The best solution for implementing the 24-hour working systemseems
  A. to change shifts at longer intervals
  B. to have longershifts
  C. to employ people who work on night shifts only
  D. to createbetter living conditions for nightworkers

Ours has become a society of employees. A hundredyears or so ago only one out of every five Americans at work was employed, i.e.,worked for somebody else. Today only one out of five is not employed but workingfor himself. And when fifty years ago "being employed" meant working as afactory laborer or as a farmhand, the employee of today is increasingly amiddle-class person with a substantial formal education, holding a professionalor management job requiring intellectual and technical skills. Indeed, twothings have characterized American society during these last fifty years:middle-class and upper-class employees have been the fastest-growing groups inour working population --growing so fast that the industrial worker, that oldestchild of the Industrial Revolution, has been losing in numerical importancedespite the expansion of industrial production.
  1. It is implied that fiftyyears ago
  A. eighty per cent of American working people were employed infactories
  B. twenty per cent of American intellectuals were employees
  C. the percentage of intellectuals in the total work force was almost the sameas that of industrial workers
  D. the percentage of intellectuals workingas employees was much smaller than that of industrial workers

What does a scientist do when he or she“explains” something? Scientific explanation comes in two forms: generalizationand deduction. Most psychologists deal with generalization. They explainparticular instances of behavior as examples of general laws. For instance mostpsychologists would explain a pathologically strong fear of dogs as an exampleof classical conditioning. Presumably, the person was frightened earlier in lifeby a dog. An unpleasant stimulus was paired with the sight of the animal(perhaps the person was knocked down by an exuberant dog) and the subsequentsight of dogs evokes the earlier response -- fear.
  1. Which of the followingis most clearly analogous to the example in the passage of the person who fearsdogs?
  A. A child chokes on a fish bone and as an adolescent is reluctant toeat fish.
  B. A person feels lonely and after a while b~s a dog forcompanionship.
  C. A child studies science in school and later grows up tobecome a teacher.
  D. A person hears that a snowstorm is predicted and thatevening is afraid to drive home.
.., Yet you will find littleif anything written on what it is to be an employee. You can find a great dealof very dubious advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion. You canalso find a good deal of work in a chosen field, whether it will be themechanist's trade or bookkeeping. Every one of these trades requires differentskills, sets different standards, and requires a different preparation. Yet theyall have employeeship in common. And increasingly, especially in the largebusiness or in government, employeeship is more important to success than thespecial professional knowledge or skill. Certainly more people fall because theydo not know the requirements of being an employee than because they do notadequately possess the skills of their trade; the higher you climb the ladder, the more you get into administrative or executive work, the greater the emphasison ability to work within the organization rather than on technical abilities orprofessional knowledge.
  1. From the passage it can be seen that employeeshiphelps one ________
  A. to be more successful in his career
  B. tobe more specialized in his field
  C. to solve technicalproblems
  D. to develop his professional skill
在这段中关于当好雇员的表达方式有“whatit is to be all employee”,“have employeeship”,和“the requirements of being allemployee”等等。

I entered thehotel manager’s office and sat down. I had just lost £50 and I felt very upset."I left the money in my room," I said, "and it's not there now." The manager wassympathetic, but he could do nothing. "Everyone's losing money these days." hesaid. He started to complain about this wicked world but was interrupted by aknock at the door. A girl came in and put an envelope on his desk. It contained£50. "I found this outside this gentleman's room." she said. "Well, "I said tothe manager, "there is still some honesty in this world!"
  1. What did thewriter believe had happened to his money?
  A. He had left his money in themanager's office.
  B. Someone had stolen his money.
  C. The managerhad the money.
  D. The girl had stolen the money.
作者说:“I left themoney in my room, and it’s not there now”,这句话的含义就是 “He believed that someone hadstolen his money”。e find that bright children are rarely held back bymixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience areenriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming pupils. It doesnot take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It canhave a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, itcan be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!
Besides, itis rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to developthe abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. Wealso value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-abilityteaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classrooms, wework in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them theopportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how tothink, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicateeffectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from theteacher.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work onindividual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. Theyalso have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encour~/ge ourpupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to dothis efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matterwhat age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.
  1. In the passagethe author's attitude towards "mixed-ability teaching" is ________
  A.criticalB. questioning
  C. approving D.objective
2.The author argues that a teacher's chief concern should be the development ofthe student's _______.
  A. personal qualities and social skills
  B.total personality
  C. learning ability and communicative skills
  D.intellectual ability
3.The author’s purpose of writing this passage is to______.
  A. argue forteaching bright and not—SO-bright pupils in the same class
  B. recommendpair work and group work for classroom activities
  C. offer advice on theproper use of the library
  D. emphasize the importance of appropriateformal classroom teaching
