  Versatile actors can play all kinds of roles.

  2. vicinity n. 附近

  in the vicinity 邻近

  There's a factory in the vicinity of the school.

  学校邻近有个工厂。

  3. visa n. 签证

  He is applying to the Consul for a visa.

  他正向领事申请签证。

  4. visualize v. 设想

  Try to visualize him as an old man.

  尽量设想他是一位老人。

  5. vulgar a. 粗俗的

  词义辨析:vulgar, coarse, crude, gross

  vulgar: 侧重指对听者的冒犯,往往强调粗野,言行、趣味不高,缺乏教养

  coarse: 指缺乏教养,言谈粗俗,举止粗野,可与vulgar换用

  crude: 与vulgar同义,也指言谈举止粗俗,不文雅,缺乏教养

  gross: 语气强烈,指粗鲁、无礼貌,令人讨厌

  hurry: 指赶紧或匆忙地做某事或催促别人做某事,隐含草率或混乱意味

  rush: 含义与hurry相近,但显得更仓促更慌乱

  speed: 侧重实际的快速行动,常用词组是speed up

  7. allege v. 宣称,断言

  词义辨析:assert, affirm, allege, maintain, testify, claim

  assert: 主观意味强,指自认为某事就是如此,而不管事实如何

  affirm: 侧重在作出断言时表现出的坚定与不可动摇的态度

  allege: 多指无真凭实据,不提供证据的断言或宣称

  maintain: 与assert近义,但前者指坚决维护某种主张或观点

  testify: 多指在法庭作证,庄严地宣称自己所说属实

  claim: 可与assert换用,但语气弱一些,侧重指行使自己的权利提出要求令他人承认

  So they alleged, but have they any proof?

  The newspapers allege that the police shot the suspect without warning.

  8. allocate v.分配

  词义辨析:assign, distribute, divide, allocate

  assign: 指按照某种原则进行的硬性分配,也不一定是很公平的。

  distribute: 通常指以整体或定量分为若干份来分配。

  divide: 普通用词,侧重将某物分成若干份分配给他人,当某物一分为二时,含平均分配之意。

  allocate: 主要指金钱、财产、权力或领土等的分配,着重分配的比例和专门用途。

  You must allocate the money carefully.

  你们必须谨慎地分配钱。

  9. appeal v. 有吸引力,上诉,呼吁

  Jazz hasn't much appeal to me.

  爵士乐对我没有什么吸引力。

  His appeal to a higher court was set aside.

  他的上诉被驳回。

  Their appeal for help went unheeded.

  他们求助的呼吁未受到注意。

  10. applicable a. 适用的

  Western notions of human rights are not necessarily applicable in other societies.
